How to locate Goldmund Speakers in a room

The best Epilogue room placement

In Stereo systems

The stereo placement of a pair of Epilogue, both single Epilogue 1 or Epilogue 1-Epilogue 2 combinations is quite conventional.

The ideal distance between speakers and distance between speakers and listener are mostly dictated by the room size. The generally best rule is to place the speakers at a minimum of 2 feet from adjacent walls and to listen at a distance which is between 1 and 1.5 times the resulting distance between the speakers.

Distance from the back wall is less critical with the Epilogue than with other speakers thanks to their ultra-rigid construction and the fact that ports are not radiating in the back. So this point is not too critical.

The speaker convergence towards the listener is also matter of the room acoustics but a good rule is to make the speaker face a point slightly behind the listener.

The only very critical rule to respect is the height of the speaker. The Epilogue has been designed so the listening height is ideally located between the woofer and tweeter, or easier, in the center of the Epilogue 1. Try to keep this if you want to insure the best imaging and phase linearity.

If the room has serious low frequency resonance, it is very practical to experiment small displacements of the speakers from their original position to avoid the resonance excitation points. Experience by displacing them by 2 feet first then one foot in all directions until you reach the point where the resonance is minimized.

The acoustics of the room is usually more a problem than the speaker placement itself. It is a common sense rule to have the wall behind the listener absorbing more than the wall behind the speakers, or have the back wall very far from the listener himself if you may. For lateral walls, have absorbing surfaces on both lateral walls that are located to kill the first speaker reflection.

Home-Theater systems

  • The front speakers and the screen

When using any configuration from a single pair of Epilogue 1 up to a full Epilogue speaker for the front channels it’s usually best to locate the speakers 2 to 3 feet in front of the screen but as close as possible form the right and left side of the screen without masking the view for the leftmost or rightmost watchers. This provides the best imaging on the screen, and a very continuous mix between the center and front speaker channels when using the full Epilogue with phantom center channel.

  • Solutions for the rear speakers

When using the Epilogue in a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system, the first and obvious solution is to use a pair of Epilogue 1 for the rear left and right channels. Their very wide bandwidth and perfect sonic match with the front speakers is providing the best results. Try to maintain the speaker height as they are on the front (or for the full Epilogue, as is the lower Epilogue 1. Using a pair of Epi-foot warranties the height is correct and the mechanical grounding is well established.

For more ambitious system a pair of Epilogue 1-Epilogue 2 combination will be even more spectacular and allows higher playback levels. We even know customers who use a full Epilogue pair in front and in the back, but that’s extreme…

For 7.1 an additional pair of Epilogue 1 is usually ideal, located slightly behind the listener, facing him. Depending on the room width, level may have to be reduced and delay increased to allow a proper spacious reproduction.

Finally for users who want to have a less expensive rear channel solution, the Goldmund Logos, either a double one on its side or a pair of miniLogos located like the Epilogue 1 may be a very good choice. Their identical height (when using the stand) and speaker configuration make them indistinguishable from the front channel in terms of sound quality.

The best Logos room placement

Possible configurations

The Logos speakers may be used in a wide variety of configurations, allowing a progressive upgrade from 2 speakers up to the most complete configurations. We recommend you to look at our Logos Configuration page to have an idea of the possibilities.

It shows the proper locations of the speakers in a standard room with all the benefits of the dual enclosures of a Logos allowing center channel, semi-phantom, single rear speaker etc…

In Stereo systems

The Mini Logos is not different from the Epilogue for its Stereo room placement. We recommend you read the above Epilogue paragraph to have more detail.

In Home-Theater systems

  • The front speakers and the screen

The rules established above for the relative position of a pair of Epilogue in front of the screen apply perfectly to the Logos configuration, with or without the Logos Subwoofer. In addition, they are important when using half of each speaker for creating the phantom center channel.

The center channel may also be created by using a third Logos speaker located below the screen with its wide side laying on a lower support (see the Logos Configuration page). Try to avoid the support to be too low which would put too much emphasis to the low frequency and ruin the tonal balance.

The additional Logos Subwoofer should be used in pairs and located below the front Logos right and left of the screen. They must be well matched in phase by aligning the front panels. A single subwoofer is also possible but its location is quite critical. Below one of the speaker is the best.

  • Solutions for the rear speakers

Thanks to its dual enclosure construction, a single Logos may be used in smallest configurations to reproduce both rear channels. You may try to locate the Logos on its wide side or facing the ceiling, behind the listeners.

A pair of Logos provides a perfectly matching rear configuration to a pair of Logos front configuration with or without center speaker, with or without additional front Subwoofer.

Three rear speaker will offer a better 5.1 to 7.1 evolution with all possible kind of combination of the 6 available half-speakers. Reaching that point experimenting will be necessary to find the optimal combination for the room. More speakers will always provide stronger dynamics, more spacious reproduction and better sound. This is the beauty of this system.
